577 Behind the Scenes Tour: A Natural Landscape

Tour the 577 grounds with 577 horticulturists Bennett Dowling and Samantha Day to gather garden inspiration while discussing horticulture design. Bennett will walk you through his process in redesigning a few different beds throughout his 4 years at 577. Samantha will walk you through some of the woven features she’s incorporated into garden spaces. Both horticulturists will talk about design elements they reflect on while mapping out a bed, things they think about while making plant choices, how they use color and texture in plantings to make beds visually interesting. Everyone will leave with plenty of ideas to try in their own gardens, as well as some handouts to get started.

When: Tuesday, June 25, 6pm to 8pm

Instructors: Bennett O. Dowling & Samantha Day

Bennett has been working professionally in horticulture for 16 years but has played in the garden since he was 5, gardening in Arizona, Ohio, and South Carolina. He holds a BS in Regional and Urban Planning, minoring in Landscape Architecture, from Miami University and has an Associates Degree in Landscape Horticulture Technology from Cincinnati State. He has written for Ohio Gardener magazine and worked for garden author Denny McKeown. Bennett’s main goal is to empower people to create spaces that are beautiful, inspiring, and in harmony with the natural world.

Samantha is the Organic Garden Horticulturalist at 577. Her background includes a master’s degree in Soil Science, which spurred her initial interests in topics like geomorphology. She has worked for organic farms in the US learning the ins and outs of vegetable production. She also worked in permaculture & semi-wild food systems in Nepal learning traditional, unmechanized methods from subsistence village farmers. Her passion is understanding the relationship between, and benefits of, both historical and innovative techniques for growing and harvesting food. She believes in deep observation of nature to inform a balanced garden, and a balanced being.

REFUND POLICY:

Important Considerations: As a small non-profit organization, we strive to keep class sizes small and affordable. Please only register for classes you will be able to attend, and reserve cancellations for emergencies and illnesses. Even with the waitlist that we offer for most classes, when you cancel out of a class, the other excited potential participants may have made other plans because the class is full.

This refund policy was established to honor 577's Instructors, to respect the time and energy they invest in preparing for each class, and to encourage class participants to weigh their class registrations carefully and in balance with other potential participants.

If you choose to withdraw from a class, the refund policies are as follows:

Refund via the Original Method of Payment ~ Credit Card, Cash, or Check*:
>>> 100% refund with seven (7) or more business days’ notice prior to the start of class, less a 5% administrative fee.
>>> 50% refund with three (3) to six (6) business days' notice prior to the start of class, less a 5% administrative fee. (If we can fill your spot with another participant, you will receive a 100% refund, less a 5% administrative fee.)
>>> No refunds will be given for cancellations two (2) business days prior to the start of class. (If we can fill your spot with another participant, you will receive a 100% refund, less a 5% administrative fee.)

Refund via Household Credit to use on another class at a future date*:
>>> 100% refund as a Household Credit with seven (7) or more business days’ notice prior to the start of class.
>>> 50% refund as a Household Credit with three (3) to six (6) business days' notice prior to the start of class. (If we can fill your spot with another participant, you will receive a 100% refund.)
>>> No refunds will be given for cancellations two (2) business days prior to the start of class. (If we can fill your spot with another participant, you will receive a 100% refund via Household Credit.)
