Creative Patchwork

Program is Full
Learn to design colorful patchwork while exploring the creativity and versatility of hand-sewing. If you’ve been interested in learning how to hand sew patchwork for a quilt project or build hand sewing skills, this is the perfect class to get started.

Class will cover a brief history of traditional patchwork and the ways it has been adapted as an art form over time. There will then be a demo on how to select, cut, and piece fabrics into a nine-patch block and a discussion of how to cut and piece other simple blocks. Participants will create their own nine-patch block design from a variety of precut fabrics and piece them with guidance from the instructor.

Class will emphasize ways to embrace slow stitching and how hand sewing can promote relaxation, connection, and mindful creativity. Participants will work at their own pace with the option of finishing their patchwork in class or at home.

Finished nine-patch blocks will be approximately 8” x 8” and can used as the start of a quilt project, textile art journal, or to mend and embellish clothing. No prior sewing experience is necessary. All supplies are included.

Skills covered in this class:
• Discussion of tools and materials needed
• Selecting and preparing fabrics for patchwork, including scraps and recycled fabrics
• How to cut fabrics for patchwork
• How to combine fabric colors creatively to design a nine-patch quilt block
• How to thread a needle and tie a knot
• How to stitch a running stitch
